A Short History of the College

Akrokerri College of Education is one of the Ghana Education Trust Institutions and was established on October 26, 1962, out of emergency circumstances to cater for surplus candidates who could not find places in the existing Two-Year Teacher Training Colleges. It was in the same year that the Teachers’ Certificate ‘A’ Four-Year Programme was started.

In 1969, the Two-Year Post Secondary Teacher Training Programme was added. In 1973, a Specialist Course for Mathematics and Science was introduced but lasted only three years. Earlier, in 1964, a 2-Year English Specialist Course began and was transferred to Winneba in 1966.

In 1969, the Post Secondary Programme changed to a 3-Year course with specializations in Mathematics and Science, English and Social Studies, Business Education, Home Science and Catering.

Five Hundred and Eighty-Seven (587) teachers were trained before the Programme was phased out in 1982. The College also became a Residential College for the Modular Teacher Training Programme started in 1983.

The 3-Year Diploma in Basic Education later replaced the Certificate ‘A’ Programme. With the passage of the Colleges of Education Act 847, Akrokerri College of Education is now a Tertiary Institution.

Currently, the College offers a Bachelor of Education in Junior High School Education and Primary Education, with a student population of 1,737.
